Helping Schools Build Stronger Mathematics Programs
FOR ADMINISTRATORS, PRINCIPALS AND SCHOOL LEADERS
Mathematics as a Whole
Sometimes the issue is not one student, one teacher, or one grade.
When students repeatedly progress through school with weakened or missing math foundations, it may be time to look at the mathematics program as a whole.
Pro Math Coach provides educational math consulting to help schools review, strengthen, and redesign their mathematics programs — building greater coherence across grades, stronger mathematical foundations, and better long-term outcomes for students.
What Struggling Students Can Teach Us About the Math System
For years, Pearlynne Leong has worked closely with students who arrive at Pro Math Coach several years behind in math — often after receiving tutoring, learning support, or other interventions.
By the time these students seek intensive help, the difficulty is rarely limited to what they are learning in their current grade.
Instead, weaknesses may have accumulated over several years. Skills that should support later mathematics may never have been fully developed, making each new level increasingly difficult to learn.
Working intensively with these students provides a unique perspective on what happens downstream when mathematical foundations have not held.
It also raises a much bigger question:
What can we do upstream so fewer students reach this point in the first place?
Looking at Mathematics as a System
Strong Math Programs Are Built Across Grades — Not One Grade at a Time
Mathematics is cumulative.
What students learn in one year becomes the foundation for what they are expected to understand and apply in the years that follow. When important skills are not sufficiently developed, those weaknesses can compound as students progress through increasingly complex mathematics.
A strong mathematics program therefore requires more than good curriculum materials or strong individual teachers. It requires coherence across the entire mathematical pathway.
Educational Math Consulting helps schools step back and examine how the different parts of their mathematics program work together.
Depending on the needs of the school, a review may examine areas such as:
Curriculum progression — how mathematical knowledge and skills develop from one grade to the next
Foundational skills — whether students are developing the essential skills needed for future mathematics
Instructional consistency — how mathematical methods, terminology, notation, and expectations align across classrooms and grades
Mastery & readiness — whether students are sufficiently prepared before progressing to more advanced mathematics
Intervention & remediation — how students who fall behind are identified and supported
Problem solving & application — how students learn to apply accumulated mathematical knowledge beyond familiar exercises
Grade-to-grade transitions — whether students are adequately prepared for the mathematical expectations of the next level
Math anxiety & confidence — how repeated difficulty may affect students' willingness and ability to engage with mathematics
The purpose is not to impose a one-size-fits-all model.
It is to understand where the school's mathematics program is strong, where greater alignment may be needed, and where thoughtful changes could produce stronger outcomes for students over time..
How I Can Help Your School
Examining the Mathematics Program as a Whole
My consulting work helps schools examine and redesign their mathematics program as a whole — looking beyond individual classrooms or isolated areas of difficulty to understand how the different parts of the mathematics program work together across grades.
Depending on the needs of the school, this may include examining:
Foundational Skill Development
Are students developing the essential mathematical skills they need at each stage, and are those foundations strong enough to support increasingly complex mathematics?
Curriculum Progression
Does the sequence of learning build logically and effectively from foundational concepts and skills toward more advanced mathematics?
Grade-to-Grade Continuity
Are expectations sufficiently connected from one grade to the next, or are there gaps, repetitions, or inconsistencies that may affect students as they progress through the school?
Instructional Alignment
Are there opportunities for greater consistency in mathematical methods, terminology, notation, expectations, and instructional practices across teachers and grade levels?
Intervention & Remediation
When students begin falling behind, how are difficulties identified and addressed? Does intervention primarily help students manage current coursework, or does it also address the underlying foundations contributing to those difficulties?
Student Mastery & Readiness
Are students developing sufficient proficiency before being expected to build upon those skills at the next level?
Long-Term Mathematical Readiness
Is the mathematics program preparing students not only for their current grade, but for the increasing demands of mathematics in the years ahead?
From Program Review to Comprehensive Redesign
Not every school needs a complete mathematics program redesign.
For some schools, the consulting process may identify specific areas where relatively targeted changes could strengthen student learning and improve continuity across grades.
For others, the review may reveal broader structural issues that warrant a more comprehensive examination of curriculum progression, foundational expectations, instructional practices, intervention, and grade-to-grade alignment.
In those situations, consulting can extend beyond identifying the issues to helping the school develop, redesign, and implement a more coherent mathematics program across grades.
The goal is not to replace what is already working.
It is to identify what should be preserved, strengthened, better aligned, or reconsidered so that the mathematics program works more effectively as a connected whole — and students are better prepared for what comes next and positioning the school at the leading edge of mathematics education..
About Pearlynne Leong
A Perspective Shaped by Two Educational Worlds
Pearlynne Leong is a BC Certified Teacher, Math Anxiety Specialist, and Founder of Pro Math Coach.
Born and raised in Singapore, Pearlynne completed her formative education within the Singapore school system before completing her professional teacher education at the University of British Columbia.
Her experience in mathematics education has since spanned classroom teaching and years of intensive one-to-one work with students who have struggled significantly with mathematics — including students who have fallen several years behind despite previous tutoring and intervention.
This combination has given Pearlynne a distinctive perspective.
She understands mathematics not only from the perspective of how it is taught, but also from years of seeing what happens when important mathematical foundations do not fully develop and those weaknesses accumulate as students progress through school.
Her work with struggling students has required her to look beneath current-grade difficulties, identify where mathematical development has weakened, and understand how earlier gaps can affect increasingly advanced mathematics years later.
It is this experience that led her to begin asking a larger question:
What if we could address more of these problems upstream — before students fall years behind?
Today, Pearlynne brings that perspective to schools through Educational Math Consulting, helping school leaders examine mathematics across the broader educational pathway and identify opportunities to strengthen the way mathematical knowledge, skills, and readiness develop from one grade to the next.
Her goal is to help schools build mathematics programs that are coherent, rigorous, practical, and sustainable — strengthening outcomes for students today while building a stronger mathematical pathway for the students who follow.
“What students can achieve in math tomorrow depends on the foundations we build today.”
